Kasa obake sculpture. It stands aproximately 69cm (27 inches) tall and weighs around 1,1kg.

Base body, tongue and sandal are 3D printed in resin, while the umbrella part is made from an actual paper and wood umbrella, which has been aged and torn for this sculpture. The wholes in the paper may slightly vary in shape and size from one Kasa-obake to another. The strips on the sandal are hand braided with esparto grass.

The body and face under the umbrella are fully modelled, although the umbrella can not be opened.

The resin parts of this sculpture are hand painted using acrylics and the eye is partially made with clear UV resin to give a realistic look.

ABAOUT KASA OBAKE IN JAPANESE FOLCLORE:

Kasa obake are Tsukumogami, old tools and objects that become Yokai when they reach a certain advanced age.

Kasa Obake (or Karakasa) are transformations of Chinese-style oiled-paper umbrellas. They have a single large eye, a long, protruding tongue, and either one or two legs upon which they hop around wildly.

Karakasa kozō are not particularly fearsome as far as yōkai go. Their favorite method of surprising humans is to sneak up on them and deliver a large, oily lick with their enormous tongues—which may be traumatic even though it isn’t dangerous. Caution is advised, however. There are other umbrella tsukumogami which are dangerous to humans, and care should be taken not to confuse them with this more playful spirit.
